Bartle on Human Rights in Virtual Worlds

Professor Richard Bartle is back again to help out with our course Human Rights and Diversity in Serious Games 2011.

At first glance the subject of human rights might seem far removed from games – games are “not real” after all. But Professor Richard Bartle – being one of the pioneers of massively multiplayer online games does a good job convincing you otherwise. Working with virtual worlds since 1978 he’s had a lot of time to think of the (very real) legal, moral, ethical and social implications that games can have in our lives.

Eurogamer.dk interviews Zeal Studio

The International Research School of Game Design (IRSGD) gathers for a symposium this week. The IRSGD is a collaboration between Uppsala University and Gotland University and consists of an international gathering of leading game designers and academics working to create a greater understanding in- and development of game design and its applications in other fields.

Three of the invited senior game designers held short lecturs, giving their take on the subject of game design and how it can be developed in the future.

Ernest Adams, Mike Sellers and Richard Bartle started the week with a guest lecture each; sharing their thoughts on game design and how the field can be developed in the future.

VeloCity & Carnage Previews | Gotland University’s Gaming Legends In Training

The student developers of today will eventually become the legendary designers of tomorrow, and nowhere is this cliched statement more true than at Gotland University. This small Swedish outfit boasts alumni credited in games from Blizzard, Lionhead, Ubisoft, DICE, Starbreeze, Avalanche, Grin and many other studios… and are taught ethics and human rights issues as well as cutting edge game development. Each year, they bring their finest projects to GDC and Gamescom to be shown off to the world and brought to the attention of potential publishers.

We’ve already published previews of the outstanding mobile masterpiece Walkabout and the revolutionary RTS Victorious Skies, but it’s time to take a look at two more student projects that are shaping up nicely.
